YETA turns the world around Okello

YETA turns the world around Okello

Okello Andrew is a 22 year-old YETA youth from Lobo Wire (meaning the world turns around) Youth Association in Alito sub-county in Kole district. He is the YA Secretary since the group formed in November 2015 and doubles as the VSLA group Secretary.

He attended YETA trainings at group level including: Financial Literacy, Agro Entrepreneurship and Agricultural Skills trainings in horticulture among others. This married father of two made up his mind to invest a total of 90,000 UGX ($25) from his personal savings into horticulture on a quarter acre plot. So far he sold over 39 boxes of onions from which he has earned 850,000 UGX ($236). Harvesting is still on-going and he expects to earn an additional 1,600,000 UGX ($444) from the balance in the garden. He is also ventured into the production of eggplants from which he expects to earn 700,000 UGX ($195) after investing approximately 25,000 UGX ($7). He has injected part of his earnings 51,000 UGX ($14) into cabbage production (0.5 acres) from which he expects at least 450,000 UGX ($125).

Okello describes his success using metaphors from their group name Lobo wire which literally means “the world turns around.” He says YETA has turned his world around for the good. From his total earnings, Andrew plans to buy a piece of land in Olaro trading center on which he plans to construct a commercial building then rent out one side but use the other side to do produce buying and selling. By December 2017, he plans to purchase a motorcycle to assist in transporting his horticultural produce to Lira town where there is ready market. At the moment he hires a motorbike for transporting his produce at 40,000 UGX ($11) per week. Using his increased income, Andrew has managed to enroll his first-born daughter in a good boarding school in Alito called Phrobel Nursery and Primary school.
